1.2.3.3.1 Configure 'Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run'

Information

You can enable the setting for Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run to disable Windows Messenger and prevent the program from running. Note: This setting only affects Windows Messenger software included in Windows XP. This setting will not prevent users from running MSN Messenger or Windows Live Messenger. Because this application has been used for malicious purposes such as spam, the distribution of malicious software, and disclosure of sensitive data, Microsoft recommends to enable this setting.

Solution

Configure the following Group Policy setting in a manner that is consistent with the security and operational requirements of your organization-

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Messenger\Do not allow Windows Messenger to be run

Impact- Users will be unable to use Windows Messenger.
