33.1 (L2) Ensure 'Enable news and interests' is set to 'Not Allowed'

Information

This policy setting specifies whether the

news and interests

feature is allowed on the device.

The recommended state for this setting is: Not Allowed

Note: This setting only applies to Windows 10. When configured in settings catalog for a Windows 11 system an error will be generated in both Intune and the local event log.

Due to privacy concerns, apps and features such as

news and interests

on the Windows taskbar should be treated as a possible security risk due to the potential of data being sent back to third-parties, such as Microsoft.

In addition, the app may display inappropriate

news and interests

within the feed.

Solution

To establish the recommended configuration via configuration profiles, set the following Settings Catalog path to Not Allowed :

Feeds\Enable news and interests

Note: At time of benchmark publication, the Feeds category was not visible when browsing by category. To find this setting, search for news and feeds and the Feeds category will show.

Impact:

The

news and interests

feature on the Windows taskbar will not be available on the device.

Note: At time of benchmark publication, this setting does not hide or disable the taskbar menu options for the

news and interests

feature, however attempting to turn the feature back on does not cause any visible change. It is possible that Microsoft will modify this behavior to 'gray out' the taskbar menu options in a future OS update.
