5.2 Ensure 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRPsvc)' is set to 'Not Installed'

Information

This policy setting enables serverless peer name resolution over the Internet using the Peer Name Resolution Protocol (PNRP).

The STIG recommended state for this setting is: Not Installed

Peer Name Resolution Protocol is a distributed and (mostly) serverless way to handle name resolution of clients with each other. In a high security environment, it is more secure to rely on centralized name resolution methods maintained by authorized staff.

Solution

To establish the recommended configuration via GP, set the following UI path to: Not Installed

Computer Configuration\Policies\Windows Settings\Security Settings\System Services\Peer Name Resolution Protocol

OR

To Uninstall the

Peer Name Resolution Protocol

feature:

- Start 'Server Manager'
- Select the server with the role
- Scroll down to 'ROLES AND FEATURES' in the right pane
- Select 'Remove Roles and Features' from the drop-down 'TASKS' list
- Select the appropriate server on the 'Server Selection' page and click 'Next'
- Deselect 'Peer Name Resolution Protocol' on the 'Features' page
- Click 'Next' and 'Remove' as prompted (if installed).

Impact:

Some peer-to-peer and collaborative applications, such as Remote Assistance, may not function.
