Continuous network monitoring is not a new concept in network security, but it is a growing trend. Tenable Network Security pioneered continuous network monitoring back in 2004 with the introduction of SecurityCenter Continuous View (SecurityCenter CV) and has been improving the technology ever since. Continuous network monitoring helps executives answer questions like: Where are our risks? How effective is our security program? How do we measure security success? What should we invest in next?

In his March 26, 2015 Network World opinion piece, In Cybersecurity, the Network Doesn’t Lie, Jon Oltsik, principal analyst with Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) outlines some of the reasons why security professionals are increasingly turning to continuous network monitoring to enhance cybersecurity.

The high-profile healthcare breaches this year alone, as well as the growth of the lucrative market for healthcare information (“over $500 for a complete dossier”), are a testament that current security processes and solutions require a re-evaluation.

High profile security breaches continue to occur (see infographic) in spite of the large investments that companies are making to secure their businesses and IT infrastructures. According to Mandiant’s 2014 Threat Report, two-thirds of the companies that have been breached did not find out about it until it was reported in the media.

Recently, SC Magazine published a compelling article by Craig Shumard, The Security Model Is Broken, in which he declared:

“Our security model is broken and needs to be revamped. If [a major financial institution] – with a budget of $250 million and 1,000 security professionals – cannot stop or detect a major security breach, there is little hope for the rest of us. Unless something changes…”
