Crypt::CBC Perl module 2.16 and earlier, when running in RandomIV mode, uses an initialization vector (IV) of 8 bytes, which results in weaker encryption when used with a cipher that requires a larger block size than 8 bytes, such as Rijndael.

A remote attacker who is able to connect to the Satellite Server XML-RPC service could use this flaw to obtain limited information about Satellite Server users, such as login names, associated email addresses, internal user IDs, and partial information about entitlements. Lincoln Stein discovered that the Perl Crypt::CBC module produces weak ciphertext when used with block encryption algorithms with blocksize > 8 bytes.

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-200603-15 (Crypt::CBC: Insecure initialization vector)

    Lincoln Stein discovered that Crypt::CBC fails to handle 16 bytes     long initializiation vectors correctly when running in the RandomIV     mode, resulting in a weaker encryption because the second part of every     block will always be encrypted with zeros if the blocksize of the     cipher is greater than 8 bytes.
  Impact :

    An attacker could exploit weak ciphertext produced by Crypt::CBC     to bypass certain security restrictions or to gain access to sensitive     data.
  Workaround :

    There is no known workaround at this time.
