In Apache Xerces-C XML Parser library before 3.2.1, processing of external DTD paths can result in a null pointer dereference under certain conditions.

An update of the xerces package has been released.

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM / 18.04 ESM host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-4784-1 advisory.

    It was discovered that Xerces-C++ XML Parser mishandles certain kinds of external DTD references,     resulting in a user-after-free. An attacker could use this vulnerability to cause a denial of service     (crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. This issue affected only Ubuntu 16.04 ESM. (CVE-2016-2099)

    It was discovered that Xerces-C++ XML Parser fails to successfully parse a DTD that is too deeply nested.
    An unauthenticated attacker could use this vulnerability to cause a denial of service. This issue affected     only Ubuntu 16.04 ESM. (CVE-2016-4463)

    It was discovered that Xerces-C++ mishandles certain kinds of external DTD references, resulting in     dereference of a NULL pointer. An attacker could use this vulnerability to cause a denial of service.

Alberto Garcia, Francisco Oca and Suleman Ali of Offensive Research discovered that the Xerces-C XML parser mishandles certain kinds of external DTD references, resulting in dereference of a NULL pointer while processing the path to the DTD. The bug allows for a denial of service attack in applications that allow DTD processing and do not prevent external DTD usage, and could conceivably result in remote code execution.

For Debian 7 'Wheezy', these problems have been fixed in version 3.1.1-3+deb7u5.

We recommend that you upgrade your xerces-c packages.
