An exploitable command injection vulnerability exists in the gplotMakeOutput function of Leptonica 1.74.4. A specially crafted gplot rootname argument can cause a command injection resulting in arbitrary code execution. An attacker can provide a malicious path as input to an application that passes attacker data to this function to trigger this vulnerability.

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-4819-1 advisory.

    It was discovered that Leptonica incorrectly handled path names. An attacker could possibly use this issue     to obtain sensitive information. This issue only affected Ubuntu 16.04 ESM. (CVE-2017-18196)

    It was discovered that Leptonica incorrectly handled certain input arguments. An attacker could possibly     use this issue to execute arbitrary commands. (CVE-2018-3836)

    It was discovered that Leptonica incorrectly handled input arguments. An attacker could possibly use this     issue to cause a denial of service or other unspecified impact. (CVE-2018-7186)
