An issue was discovered in phpMyAdmin before 4.9.0.1. A vulnerability was reported where a specially crafted database name can be used to trigger an SQL injection attack through the designer feature.

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM / 18.04 ESM / 20.04 ESM host has a package installed that is affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-4843-1 advisory.

    Emanuel Bronshtein discovered that phpMyAdmin would allow sensitive information to be leaked when the     argument separator in a URL was not the default & value. An attacker could use this vulnerability to     obtain the CSRF token of a user. This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM and Ubuntu 16.04 ESM.

    Isaac Bennetch discovered that phpMyAdmin was incorrectly restricting user access due to the behavior of     the substr function on some PHP versions. An attacker could use this vulnerability to bypass login     restrictions established for users that have no password set. This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM.
    This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM and Ubuntu 16.04 ESM. (CVE-2017-18264)

    Emanuel Bronshtein discovered that phpMyAdmin failed to properly sanitize input in the form of parameters     sent during a table editing operation. An attacker could use this vulnerability to trigger an endless     recursion and cause a denial-of-service (DoS). This issue only affected Ubuntu 14.04 ESM and Ubuntu 16.04     ESM.     CSW Research Labs discovered that phpMyAdmin failed to properly sanitize input.

    An attacker could use this vulnerability to execute SQL injection attacks. This issue only affected Ubuntu     16.04 ESM. (CVE-2020-5504)

    Giwan Go and Yelang Lee discovered that phpMyAdmin was vulnerable to an XSS attack in the transformation     feature. If a victim were to click on a crafted link, an attacker could run malicious JavaScript on the     victim's system. This issue only affected Ubuntu 20.04 ESM. (CVE-2020-26934)

    Andre S discovered that phpMyAdmin incorrectly handled certain SQL statements in the search feature. A     remote, authenticated attacker could use this to inject malicious SQL into a query. This issue only     affected Ubuntu 20.04 ESM. (CVE-2020-26935)

Welcome to **phpMyAdmin 4.9.0.1**, a bugfix release that includes important security fixes.

This release fixes two security vulnerabilities :

  - PMASA-2019-3 is a SQL injection flaw in the Designer     feature

  - PMASA-2019-4 is a CSRF attack that's possible through     the 'cookie' login form

Upgrading is highly recommended for all users. Using the 'http' auth_type instead of 'cookie' can mitigate the CSRF attack.

The solution for the CSRF attack does remove the former functionality to log in directly through URL parameters (as mentioned in FAQ 4.8, such as https://example.com/phpmyadmin/?pma_username=root&password=foo). Such behavior was discouraged and is now removed. Other query parameters work as expected; only pma_username and pma_password have been removed.

This release also includes fixes for many bugs, including :

According to its self-reported version number, the phpMyAdmin application hosted on the remote web server is prior to 4.8.6. It is, therefore, affected by a SQL injection (SQLi) vulnerability that exists in designer feature of phpMyAdmin.
