Mozilla developers and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 102. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 103.

An update of the nss package has been released.

The version of firefox installed on the remote host is prior to 115.12.0-1. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the ALAS2FIREFOX-2024-026 advisory.

    Offscreen Canvas did not properly track cross-origin tainting, which could be used to access image data     from another site in violation of same-origin policy. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 127, Firefox     ESR < 115.12, and Thunderbird < 115.12. (CVE-2024-5693)

    Memory safety bugs present in Firefox 126, Firefox ESR 115.11, and Thunderbird 115.11. Some of these bugs     showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been     exploited to run arbitrary code. This vulnerability affects Firefox < 127 and Firefox ESR < 115.12.

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-202208-08 (Mozilla Firefox: Multiple Vulnerabilities)

  - Use after free in Codecs in Google Chrome prior to 101.0.4951.41 allowed a remote attacker to potentially     exploit heap corruption via a crafted HTML page. (CVE-2022-1919)

  - regex is an implementation of regular expressions for the Rust language. The regex crate features built-in     mitigations to prevent denial of service attacks caused by untrusted regexes, or untrusted input matched     by trusted regexes. Those (tunable) mitigations already provide sane defaults to prevent attacks. This     guarantee is documented and it's considered part of the crate's API. Unfortunately a bug was discovered in     the mitigations designed to prevent untrusted regexes to take an arbitrary amount of time during parsing,     and it's possible to craft regexes that bypass such mitigations. This makes it possible to perform denial     of service attacks by sending specially crafted regexes to services accepting user-controlled, untrusted     regexes. All versions of the regex crate before or equal to 1.5.4 are affected by this issue. The fix is     include starting from regex 1.5.5. All users accepting user-controlled regexes are recommended to upgrade     immediately to the latest version of the regex crate. Unfortunately there is no fixed set of problematic     regexes, as there are practically infinite regexes that could be crafted to exploit this vulnerability.
    Because of this, it us not recommend to deny known problematic regexes. (CVE-2022-24713)

  - Mozilla developers Kershaw Chang, Ryan VanderMeulen, and Randell Jesup reported memory safety bugs present     in Firefox 97. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption and we presume that with enough     effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code.  (CVE-2022-0843)

  - After a VR Process is destroyed, a reference to it may have been retained and used, leading to a use-     after-free and potentially exploitable crash.  (CVE-2022-1196)

  - Mozilla: Untrusted input used in JavaScript object indexing, leading to prototype pollution     (CVE-2022-1529)

  - If an attacker was able to corrupt the methods of an Array object in JavaScript via prototype pollution,     they could have achieved execution of attacker-controlled JavaScript code in a privileged context.

  - While the text displayed in Autofill tooltips cannot be directly read by JavaScript, the text was rendered     using page fonts. Side-channel attacks on the text by using specially crafted fonts could have lead to     this text being inferred by the webpage.  (CVE-2022-26382)

  - Mozilla: Browser window spoof using fullscreen mode (CVE-2022-26383, CVE-2022-31738)

  - If an attacker could control the contents of an iframe sandboxed with <code>allow-popups</code> but not     <code>allow-scripts</code>, they were able to craft a link that, when clicked, would lead to JavaScript     execution in violation of the sandbox.  (CVE-2022-26384)

  - In unusual circumstances, an individual thread may outlive the thread's manager during shutdown.  This     could have led to a use-after-free causing a potentially exploitable crash.  (CVE-2022-26385)

  - Previously Thunderbird for macOS and Linux would download temporary files to a user-specific directory in     <code>/tmp</code>, but this behavior was changed to download them to <code>/tmp</code> where they could be     affected by other local users.  This behavior was reverted to the original, user-specific directory.  This     bug only affects Thunderbird for macOS and Linux. Other operating systems are unaffected.

  - The sourceMapURL feature in devtools was missing security checks that would have allowed a webpage to     attempt to include local files or other files that should have been inaccessible.  (CVE-2022-28283)

  - SVG's <code><use></code> element could have been used to load unexpected content that could have     executed script in certain circumstances. While the specification seems to allow this, other browsers do     not, and web developers relied on this property for script security so gecko's implementation was aligned     with theirs.   - When generating the assembly code for <code>MLoadTypedArrayElementHole</code>, an incorrect AliasSet was     used. In conjunction with another vulnerability this could have been used for an out of bounds memory     read.  (CVE-2022-28285)

  - Due to a layout change, iframe contents could have been rendered outside of its border. This could have     led to user confusion or spoofing attacks.  (CVE-2022-28286)

  - In unusual circumstances, selecting text could cause text selection caching to behave incorrectly, leading     to a crash.  (CVE-2022-28287)

  - Mozilla developers and community members Randell Jesup, Sebastian Hengst, and the Mozilla Fuzzing Team     reported memory safety bugs present in Firefox 98. Some of these bugs showed evidence of memory corruption     and we presume that with enough effort some of these could have been exploited to run arbitrary code.

  - Mozilla: Uninitialized variable leads to invalid memory read (CVE-2022-31741)

  - Mozilla: Querying a WebAuthn token with a large number of allowCredential entries may have leaked cross-     origin information (CVE-2022-31742)

  - Firefox's HTML parser did not correctly interpret HTML comment tags, resulting in an incongruity with     other browsers. This could have been used to escape HTML comments on pages that put user-controlled data     in them.  (CVE-2022-31743)

  - An iframe that was not permitted to run scripts could do so if the user clicked on a     <code>javascript:</code> link.  (CVE-2022-34468)

  - When a TLS Certificate error occurs on a domain protected by the HSTS header, the browser should not allow     the user to bypass the certificate error.  On Firefox for Android, the user was presented with the option     to bypass the error; this could only have been done by the user explicitly.  This bug only affects Firefox     for Android.   - Navigations between XML documents may have led to a use-after-free and potentially exploitable crash.
