Security Updates for Microsoft Office Products (November 2019) (macOS)

high Nessus Plugin ID 131945

Synopsis

An application installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is affected by multiple vulnerabilities

Description

The Microsoft Office application installed on the remote macOS or Mac OS X host is missing a security update. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities:

- A remote code execution vulnerability exists in Microsoft PowerPoint software when the software fails to properly handle objects in memory. An attacker who successfully exploited the vulnerability could run arbitrary code in the context of the current user. If the current user is logged on with administrative user rights, an attacker could take control of the affected system by convining the user to open a specially crafted file to bypass authentication and execute arbitrary commands. (CVE-2019-1462)

- An information disclosure vulnerability exists when Microsoft Excel improperly discloses the contents of its memory. An attacker who exploited the vulnerability could use the information to compromise the user’s computer or data. To exploit the vulnerability, an attacker could craft a special document file and then convince the user to open it. An attacker must know the memory address location where the object was created. (CVE-2019-1464)

Solution

Microsoft has released a set of patches for Microsoft Office for Mac.
