Juniper Junos SNMP DoS (JSA11080)

high Nessus Plugin ID 141849

Synopsis

The remote device is missing a vendor-supplied security patch.

Description

According to the self reported version of Junos OS on the remote device, the device is vulnerable to a denial of service vulnerability due to a memory leak. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this, by sending multiple of a specific SNMP OID poll, to consume increasing amounts of memory, which will eventually lead to a kernel crash (vmcore). Prior to the crash, other processes might be impacted, such as failure to establish SSH connection to the device.

Note that Nessus has not attempted to exploit this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Apply the relevant Junos software release referenced in Juniper advisory JSA11080
