Amazon Linux AMI : tar (ALAS-2023-1704)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 173280

Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux AMI host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of tar installed on the remote host is prior to 1.26-31.23. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the ALAS-2023-1704 advisory.

GNU Tar through 1.34 has a one-byte out-of-bounds read that results in use of uninitialized memory for a conditional jump. Exploitation to change the flow of control has not been demonstrated. The issue occurs in from_header in list.c via a V7 archive in which mtime has approximately 11 whitespace characters.
(CVE-2022-48303)

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the tested product security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Run 'yum update tar' to update your system.
