Slackware Linux 14.0 / 14.1 / 14.2 / 15.0 / current tar Vulnerability (SSA:2023-083-01)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 173402

Synopsis

The remote Slackware Linux host is missing a security update to tar.

Description

The version of tar installed on the remote host is prior to 1.26 / 1.29 / 1.34. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the SSA:2023-083-01 advisory.

- GNU Tar through 1.34 has a one-byte out-of-bounds read that results in use of uninitialized memory for a conditional jump. Exploitation to change the flow of control has not been demonstrated. The issue occurs in from_header in list.c via a V7 archive in which mtime has approximately 11 whitespace characters.
(CVE-2022-48303)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade the affected tar package.
