Splunk Enterprise 8.2.0 < 8.2.12, 9.0.0 < 9.0.6, 9.1.0 < 9.1.1 (SVD-2023-0805)

high Nessus Plugin ID 180288

Synopsis

An application running on a remote web server host is affected by a vulnerability

Description

The version of Splunk installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the SVD-2023-0805 advisory.

- In Splunk Enterprise versions earlier than 8.2.12, 9.0.6, and 9.1.1, a dynamic link library (DLL) that ships with Splunk Enterprise references an insecure path for the OPENSSLDIR build definition. An attacker can abuse this reference and subsequently install malicious code to achieve privilege escalation on the Windows machine. (CVE-2023-40596)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade Splunk Enterprise to versions 8.2.12, 9.0.6, or 9.1.1.
This vulnerability does not affect Splunk Cloud Platform.
