Ubuntu 16.04 ESM / 18.04 ESM / 20.04 ESM : Fail2ban vulnerability (USN-5232-1)

high Nessus Plugin ID 183171

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM / 18.04 ESM / 20.04 ESM host has a package installed that is affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-5232-1 advisory.

Jakub oczek discovered that certain Fail2ban actions handled whois responses in an insecure way. If Fail2ban was configured to use certain mail actions like 'mail-whois' on a target system, a remote attacker who was able to control whois responses to this target system could possibly execute arbitrary code.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected fail2ban package.
