Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux 2023 host is missing a security update.

Description

It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the ALAS2023-2024-475 advisory.

- It was discovered that tar incorrectly handled extended attributes in PAX archives. An attacker could supply a specially crafted file and cause tar to crash, resulting in a denial of service. (CVE-2023-39804) (CVE-2023-39804)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Run 'dnf update tar --releasever 2023.3.20240108' to update your system.
