Ubuntu 16.04 ESM : Linux kernel (AWS) vulnerabilities (USN-6577-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 187933

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 ESM host has a package installed that is affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-6577-1 advisory.

- A division-by-zero error on some AMD processors can potentially return speculative data resulting in loss of confidentiality. (CVE-2023-20588)

- An issue was discovered in lib/kobject.c in the Linux kernel before 6.2.3. With root access, an attacker can trigger a race condition that results in a fill_kobj_path out-of-bounds write. (CVE-2023-45863)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected kernel package.
