high Nessus Plugin ID 189338

Synopsis

The remote Amazon Linux 2023 host is missing a security update.

Description

It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the ALAS2023-2024-491 advisory.

Spreadsheet::ParseExcel version 0.65 is a Perl module used for parsing Excel files.
Spreadsheet::ParseExcel is vulnerable to an arbitrary code execution (ACE) vulnerability due to passing unvalidated input from a file into a string-type eval. Specifically, the issue stems from the evaluation of Number format strings (not to be confused with printf-style format strings) within the Excel parsing logic. (CVE-2023-7101)

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the tested product security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Run 'dnf update perl-Spreadsheet-ParseExcel --releasever 2023.3.20240122' to update your system.
