Synopsis

The remote host is missing a security update.

Description

The version of Mattermost Desktop installed on the Windows remote host is prior to 5.9.0. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the MMSA-2024-00307 advisory.

 - Mattermost versions < 5.9.0 Desktop app failed to use an absolute path when searching the cmd.exe file, which allowed a local attacker who was able to put an cmd.exe file in the Downloads folder of a user's machine to cause remote code execution on that machine.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Mattermost Desktop version 5.9.0 or later.
