Fortinet Fortigate CVE-2004-0230 Blind Reset Attack Using the RST/SYN Bit (FG-IR-16-039)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 209826

Synopsis

Fortinet Firewall is missing one or more security-related updates.

Description

The version of Fortigate installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the FG-IR-16-039 advisory.

- TCP, when using a large Window Size, makes it easier for remote attackers to guess sequence numbers and cause a denial of service (connection loss) to persistent TCP connections by repeatedly injecting a TCP RST packet, especially in protocols that use long-lived connections, such as BGP. (CVE-2004-0230)

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Please upgrade to FortiOS version 5.2.9/5.4.2/5.6.0 or later.
