FreeBSD : xorg server -- _XkbSetCompatMap vulnerability (141f2a22-a6a7-11ef-b282-0c9d92850f7a)

high Nessus Plugin ID 211607

Language:

Synopsis

The remote FreeBSD host is missing one or more security-related updates.

Description

The version of FreeBSD installed on the remote host is prior to tested version. It is, therefore, affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the 141f2a22-a6a7-11ef-b282-0c9d92850f7a advisory.

The X.Org project reports:
The _XkbSetCompatMap() function attempts to resize the `sym_interpret` buffer.

However, It didn't update its size properly.
It updated `num_si` only, without updating `size_si`.

This may lead to local privilege escalation if the server is run as root or remote code execution (e.g. x11 over ssh).

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the FreeBSD security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected packages.
