Ubuntu 20.04 LTS : Ruby vulnerabilities (USN-7256-1)

medium Nessus Plugin ID 215050

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing one or more security updates.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 20.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the USN-7256-1 advisory.

It was discovered that Ruby incorrectly handled parsing of an XML document that has specific XML characters in an attribute value using REXML gem. An attacker could use this issue to cause Ruby to crash, resulting in a denial of service.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected libruby2.7, ruby2.7 and / or ruby2.7-dev packages.
