Tenable Nessus < 10.8.4 Multiple Vulnerabilities (TNS-2025-05)

high Nessus Plugin ID 234837

Synopsis

An instance of Nessus installed on the remote system is affected by multiple vulnerabilities.

Description

According to its self-reported version, the Tenable Nessus application running on the remote host is prior to 10.8.4. It is, therefore, affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the TNS-2025-05 advisory.

- libxml2 before 2.12.10 and 2.13.x before 2.13.6 has a NULL pointer dereference in xmlPatMatch in pattern.c. (CVE-2025-27113)

- In libxml2 2.11 before 2.11.9, 2.12 before 2.12.9, and 2.13 before 2.13.3, the SAX parser can produce events for external entities even if custom SAX handlers try to override entity content (by setting checked). This makes classic XXE attacks possible. (CVE-2024-40896)

- An issue was discovered in libexpat before 2.6.4. There is a crash within the XML_ResumeParser function because XML_StopParser can stop/suspend an unstarted parser. (CVE-2024-50602)

- libxml2 before 2.12.10 and 2.13.x before 2.13.6 has a use-after-free in xmlSchemaIDCFillNodeTables and xmlSchemaBubbleIDCNodeTables in xmlschemas.c. To exploit this, a crafted XML document must be validated against an XML schema with certain identity constraints, or a crafted XML schema must be used.
(CVE-2024-56171)

- A stack overflow vulnerability exists in the libexpat library due to the way it handles recursive entity expansion in XML documents. When parsing an XML document with deeply nested entity references, libexpat can be forced to recurse indefinitely, exhausting the stack space and causing a crash. This issue could lead to denial of service (DoS) or, in some cases, exploitable memory corruption, depending on the environment and library usage. (CVE-2024-8176)

- libxml2 before 2.12.10 and 2.13.x before 2.13.6 has a stack-based buffer overflow in xmlSnprintfElements in valid.c. To exploit this, DTD validation must occur for an untrusted document or untrusted DTD. NOTE:
this is similar to CVE-2017-9047. (CVE-2025-24928)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Tenable Nessus 10.8.4 or later.
