phpList <= 2.10.8 Variable Overwriting

high Nessus Plugin ID 35402

Synopsis

The remote web server contains a PHP application that is affected by a data modification vulnerability.

Description

The version of phpList installed on the remote host emulates PHP's 'register_globals' functionaltiy' insecurely in its 'admin/index.php' script. Provided PHP's 'register_globals' setting is disabled, an unauthenticated attacker can exploit this issue to overwrite the '_SERVER[ConfigFile]' and '_ENV[CONFIG]' global variables with user- supplied input, which is then used in PHP 'include()' functions, allowing him to view arbitrary files on the remote host or to execute arbitrary PHP code, possibly taken from third-party hosts.

Solution

Upgrade to phpList version 2.10.9 or later.
