Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU Improper Input Validation (CVE-2018-16558)

high Tenable OT Security Plugin ID 500321

Synopsis

The remote OT asset is affected by a vulnerability.

Description

A vulnerability has been identified in SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU (All versions >= V2.0 and < V2.5), SIMATIC S7-1500 CPU (All versions <= V1.8.5). Specially crafted network packets sent to port 80/tcp or 443/tcp could allow an unauthenticated remote attacker to cause a Denial-of-Service condition of the device. The security vulnerability could be exploited by an attacker with network access to the affected systems on port 80/tcp or 443/tcp. Successful exploitation requires no system privileges and no user interaction. An attacker could use the vulnerability to compromise availability of the device. At the time of advisory publication no public exploitation of this security vulnerability was known. This plugin only works with Tenable.ot. Solution

The following text was originally created by the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). The original can be found at CISA.gov.

Siemens recommends users upgrade to Version 2.5 or newer. Users who cannot upgrade because of hardware restrictions are recommended to apply the manual mitigations. Updates are available for download from the following link:

https://support.industry.siemens.com/cs/de/en/view/109478459

Siemens also recommends users apply the following manual mitigations:

- Protect network access to Port 80/tcp and Port 443/tcp of affected devices.
- Apply cell protection concept.
- Apply defense-in-depth.

As a general security measure, Siemens strongly recommends protecting network access to devices with appropriate mechanisms. In order to operate the devices in a protected IT environment, Siemens recommends configuring the environment according to Siemens’ operational guidelines for Industrial Security (Download:
https://www.siemens.com/cert/operational-guidelines-industrial-security) and following the recommendations in the product manuals.
