Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-3143-1 advisory.

Gzob Qq discovered that c-ares incorrectly handled certain hostnames. A remote attacker could use this issue to cause applications using c-ares to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected libc-ares-dev and / or libc-ares2 packages.
