Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS : PCSC-Lite vulnerability (USN-3176-1)

high Nessus Plugin ID 96719

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 14.04 LTS / 16.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-3176-1 advisory.

Peter Wu discovered that the PC/SC service did not correctly handle certain resources. A local attacker could use this issue to cause PC/SC to crash, resulting in a denial of service, or possibly execute arbitrary code with root privileges.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected libpcsclite-dev, libpcsclite1 and / or pcscd packages.
