This update addresses an arbitrary file copy vulnerability in mod_copy in ProFTPD, which allowed for remote code execution and information disclosure without authentication due to not honoring `<Limit>` constraints.

The remote host is running ProFTPD. It is affected by a vulnerability in the mod_copy module which fails to honor   <Limit READ> and <Limit WRITE> configurations as expected. An unauthenticated, remote attacker can exploit this, by   using the mod_copy module's functionality, in order to copy arbitrary files in the FTP directory, provided that   anonymous logins and mod_copy are enabled and the FTP directory is accessible from a web server. If a file exists in   the FTP directory that contains PHP code but does not use the PHP extension, an attacker can copy this file to one with   a PHP extension in order to execute code.

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201908-16 (ProFTPD: Remote code execution)

    It was discovered that ProFTPD&rsquo;s &ldquo;mod_copy&rdquo; module does not       properly restrict privileges for anonymous users.
  Impact :

    A remote attacker, by anonymously uploading a malicious file, could       possibly execute arbitrary code with the privileges of the process, cause       a Denial of Service condition or disclose information.
  Workaround :

    There is no known workaround at this time.

Tobias Maedel discovered that the mod_copy module of ProFTPD, a FTP/SFTP/FTPS server, performed incomplete permission validation for the CPFR/CPTO commands.

For Debian 8 'Jessie', this problem has been fixed in version 1.3.5e+r1.3.5-2+deb8u3.

We recommend that you upgrade your proftpd-dfsg packages.

Tobias Maedel discovered that the mod_copy module of ProFTPD, a FTP/SFTP/FTPS server, performed incomplete permission validation for the CPFR/CPTO commands.

The remote host is using ProFTPD, a free FTP server for Unix and Linux.  

All versions of ProFTPD incliuding 1.3.5b are affected by a remote code execution vulnerability due to an arbitrary file copy flaw in the mod_copy module, which is part of the default installation of ProFTPD and 'enabled by default in most distributions' according to the researcher who discovered the bug. According to the ProFTPD bug report, mod_copy does not honor the %lt;Limit READ> and <Limit WRITE> configuration settings, thereby allowing a remote attacker write permissions to 'copy any file on the FTP server' using CPFR and CPTO commands.

An arbitrary file copy vulnerability in mod_copy in ProFTPD up to 1.3.5b allows for remote code execution and information disclosure without authentication, a related issue to CVE-2015-3306.
