Mitre reports :

Modules.cpp in ZNC before 1.7.4-rc1 allows remote authenticated non-admin users to escalate privileges and execute arbitrary code by loading a module with a crafted name.

This update for znc to version 1.7.4 fixes the following issues :

Security issues fixed :

  - CVE-2019-12816: Fixed a remote code execution in     Modules.cpp (boo#1138572).

  - CVE-2019-9917: Fixed a denial of service on invalid     encoding (boo#1130360).

The remote Ubuntu 16.04 LTS / 18.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-4044-1 advisory.

    Fix vulnerability where an authenticated non-admin users could load a module with a crafted name, then     escalate privileges and run arbitrary code.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201908-15 (ZNC: Privilege escalation)

    It was discovered that ZNC&rsquo;s &ldquo;Modules.cpp&rdquo; allows remote       authenticated non-admin users to escalate privileges.
  Impact :

    A remote authenticated attacker could escalate privileges and       subsequently execute arbitrary code or conduct a Denial of Service       attack.
  Workaround :

    There is no known workaround at this time.

A vulnerability was discovered in the ZNC IRC bouncer which could result in remote code execution.

For Debian 8 'Jessie', this problem has been fixed in version 1.4-2+deb8u2.

We recommend that you upgrade your znc packages.
