Description

When an application has Groovy on the classpath and that it uses standard Java serialization mechanism to communicate between servers, or to store local data, it is possible for an attacker to bake a special serialized object that will execute code directly when deserialized. All applications which rely on serialization and do not isolate the code which deserializes objects are subject to this vulnerability.

Fix remote code execution vulnerability

The remote Redhat Enterprise Linux 6 / 7 host has packages installed that are affected by multiple vulnerabilities as referenced in the RHSA-2017:2596 advisory.

It seamlessly integrates with all existing Java     objects and libraries and compiles straight to Java bytecode so you can use it anywhere you can use Java.

    Security Fix(es):

    * Multiple object deserialization flaws were discovered in the MethodClosure class in Groovy. A specially     crafted serialized object deserialized by an application using the Groovy library could cause the     application to execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2015-3253, CVE-2016-6814)

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

cpnrodzc7, working with HP's Zero Day Initiative, discovered that Java applications using standard Java serialization mechanisms to decode untrusted data, and that have Groovy on their classpath, can be passed a serialized object that will cause the application to execute arbitrary code.

For the oldoldstable distribution (squeeze), this problem has been fixed in version 1.7.0-4+deb6u1.

For the oldstable distribution (wheezy) and stable distribution (jessie), this problem will be fixed soon.

The remote host is affected by the vulnerability described in GLSA-201610-01 (Groovy: Arbitrary code execution)

    Groovy&rsquo;s MethodClosure class, in runtime/MethodClosure.java, is       vulnerable to a crafted serialized object.
  Impact :

    Remote attackers could potentially execute arbitrary code, or cause       Denial of Service condition   Workaround :

    A workaround exists by using a custom security policy file utilizing the       standard Java security manager, or do not rely on serialization to       communicate remotely.
