    Jann Horn discovered that the Linux kernel's implementation of random seed data reported that it was in a     ready state before it had gathered sufficient entropy. An attacker could use this to expose sensitive     information. (CVE-2018-1108)

    It was discovered that the procfs filesystem did not properly handle processes mapping some memory     elements onto files. A local attacker could use this to block utilities that examine the procfs filesystem     to report operating system state, such as ps(1). (CVE-2018-1120)

    Felix Wilhelm discovered that the KVM implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly perform     permission checks in some situations when nested virtualization is used. An attacker in a guest VM could     possibly use this to escape into an outer VM or the host OS. (CVE-2018-12904)

    Jakub Jirasek discovered that multiple use-after-free errors existed in the USB/IP implementation in the     Linux kernel. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly     execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-5814)

    It was discovered that a race condition existed in the ARM Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture     (AMBA) driver in the Linux kernel that could result in a double free. A local attacker could use this to     cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-9415)

    It was discovered that an information leak existed in the generic SCSI driver in the Linux kernel. A local     attacker could use this to expose sensitive information (kernel memory). (CVE-2018-1000204)

Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel that may lead to a privilege escalation, denial of service or information leaks.

CVE-2017-5715

Multiple researchers have discovered a vulnerability in various processors supporting speculative execution, enabling an attacker controlling an unprivileged process to read memory from arbitrary addresses, including from the kernel and all other processes running on the system.

This specific attack has been named Spectre variant 2 (branch target injection) and is mitigated for the x86 architecture (amd64 and i386) by using new microcoded features.

This mitigation requires an update to the processor's microcode, which is non-free. For recent Intel processors, this is included in the intel-microcode package from version 3.20180425.1~deb8u1. For other processors, it may be included in an update to the system BIOS or UEFI firmware, or in a later update to the amd64-microcode package.

This vulnerability was already mitigated for the x86 architecture by the 'retpoline' feature.

CVE-2017-5753

Further instances of code that was vulnerable to Spectre variant 1 (bounds-check bypass) have been mitigated.

CVE-2018-1066

Dan Aloni reported to Red Hat that the CIFS client implementation would dereference a NULL pointer if the server sent an invalid response during NTLMSSP setup negotiation. This could be used by a malicious server for denial of service.

The previously applied mitigation for this issue was not appropriate for Linux 3.16 and has been replaced by an alternate fix.

CVE-2018-1093

Wen Xu reported that a crafted ext4 filesystem image could trigger an out-of-bounds read in the ext4_valid_block_bitmap() function. A local user able to mount arbitrary filesystems could use this for denial of service.

CVE-2018-1130

The syzbot software found that the DCCP implementation of sendmsg() does not check the socket state, potentially leading to a NULL pointer dereference. A local user could use this to cause a denial of service (crash). 

CVE-2018-3665

Multiple researchers have discovered that some Intel x86 processors can speculatively read floating-point and vector registers even when access to those registers is disabled. The Linux kernel's 'lazy FPU' feature relies on that access control to avoid saving and restoring those registers for tasks that do not use them, and was enabled by default on x86 processors that do not support the XSAVEOPT instruction.

If 'lazy FPU' is enabled on one of the affected processors, an attacker controlling an unprivileged process may be able to read sensitive information from other users' processes or the kernel. This specifically affects processors based on the 'Nehalem' and 'Westemere' core designs. This issue has been mitigated by disabling 'lazy FPU' by default on all x86 processors that support the FXSAVE and FXRSTOR instructions, which includes all processors known to be affected and most processors that perform speculative execution. It can also be mitigated by adding the kernel parameter: eagerfpu=on

CVE-2018-5814

Jakub Jirasek reported race conditions in the USB/IP host driver. A malicious client could use this to cause a denial of service (crash or memory corruption), and possibly to execute code, on a USB/IP server.

CVE-2018-9422

It was reported that the futex() system call could be used by an unprivileged user for privilege escalation.

CVE-2018-10853

Andy Lutomirski and Mika Penttil&auml; reported that KVM for x86 processors did not perform a necessary privilege check when emulating certain instructions. This could be used by an unprivileged user in a guest VM to escalate their privileges within the guest.

CVE-2018-10940

Dan Carpenter reported that the optical disc driver (cdrom) does not correctly validate the parameter to the CDROM_MEDIA_CHANGED ioctl. A user with access to a cdrom device could use this to cause a denial of service (crash).

CVE-2018-11506

Piotr Gabriel Kosinski and Daniel Shapira reported that the SCSI optical disc driver (sr) did not allocate a sufficiently large buffer for sense data. A user with access to a SCSI optical disc device that can produce more than 64 bytes of sense data could use this to cause a denial of service (crash or memory corruption), and possibly for privilege escalation.

CVE-2018-12233

Shankara Pailoor reported that a crafted JFS filesystem image could trigger a denial of service (memory corruption). This could possibly also be used for privilege escalation.

CVE-2018-1000204

The syzbot software found that the SCSI generic driver (sg) would in some circumstances allow reading data from uninitialised buffers, which could include sensitive information from the kernel or other tasks. However, only privileged users with the CAP_SYS_ADMIN or CAP_SYS_RAWIO capability were allowed to do this, so this has little or no security impact.

For Debian 8 'Jessie', these problems have been fixed in version 3.16.57-1. This update additionally fixes Debian bug #898165, and includes many more bug fixes from stable update 3.16.57.

  - CVE-2018-1130: A NULL pointer dereference in     dccp_write_xmit() function in net/dccp/output.c allowed     a local user to cause a denial of service by a number of     certain crafted system calls (bnc#1092904).

  - CVE-2018-12233: In the ea_get function in fs/jfs/xattr.c     a memory corruption bug in JFS can be triggered by     calling setxattr twice with two different extended     attribute names on the same file. This vulnerability can     be triggered by an unprivileged user with the ability to     create files and execute programs. A kmalloc call is     incorrect, leading to slab-out-of-bounds in jfs_xattr     (bnc#1097234).

  - CVE-2018-13053: The alarm_timer_nsleep function in     kernel/time/alarmtimer.c had an integer overflow via a     large relative timeout because ktime_add_safe is not     used (bnc#1099924).

  - CVE-2018-13406: An integer overflow in the     uvesafb_setcmap function in     drivers/video/fbdev/uvesafb.c kernel could result in     local attackers being able to crash the kernel or     potentially elevate privileges because kmalloc_array is     not used (bnc#1098016 1100418).

  - CVE-2018-3620: Local attackers on baremetal systems     could use speculative code patterns on hyperthreaded     processors to read data present in the L1 Datacache used     by other hyperthreads on the same CPU core, potentially     leaking sensitive data. (bnc#1087081).

CVE-2018-5391 aka 'FragmentSmack': A flaw in the IP packet reassembly could be used by remote attackers to consume lots of CPU time (bnc#1103097).

CVE-2018-14734: drivers/infiniband/core/ucma.c allowed ucma_leave_multicast to access a certain data structure after a cleanup step in ucma_process_join, which allowed attackers to cause a denial of service (use-after-free) (bnc#1103119).

CVE-2017-18344: The timer_create syscall implementation in kernel/time/posix-timers.c didn't properly validate the sigevent->sigev_notify field, which leads to out-of-bounds access in the show_timer function (called when /proc/$PID/timers is read). This allowed userspace applications to read arbitrary kernel memory (on a kernel built with CONFIG_POSIX_TIMERS and CONFIG_CHECKPOINT_RESTORE) (bnc#1102851 bnc#1103580).

CVE-2018-9385: When printing the 'driver_override' option from with-in the amba driver, a very long line could expose one additional uninitialized byte (bnc#1100491).

CVE-2018-13405: The inode_init_owner function in fs/inode.c allowed local users to create files with an unintended group ownership, in a scenario where a directory is SGID to a certain group and is writable by a user who is not a member of that group. Here, the non-member can trigger creation of a plain file whose group ownership is that group.
The intended behavior was that the non-member can trigger creation of a directory (but not a plain file) whose group ownership is that group. The non-member can escalate privileges by making the plain file executable and SGID (bnc#1100416).

CVE-2018-13406: An integer overflow in the uvesafb_setcmap function in drivers/video/fbdev/uvesafb.c could result in local attackers being able to crash the kernel or potentially elevate privileges because kmalloc_array is not used (bnc#1098016 1100418).

Linux 4.9 has been packaged for Debian 8 as linux-4.9. This provides a supported upgrade path for systems that currently use kernel packages from the 'jessie-backports' suite.

There is no need to upgrade systems using Linux 3.16, as that kernel version will also continue to be supported in the LTS period.

CVE-2017-5753

CVE-2017-18255

It was discovered that the performance events subsystem did not properly validate the value of the kernel.perf_cpu_time_max_percent sysctl. Setting a large value could have an unspecified security impact. However, only a privileged user can set this sysctl.

CVE-2018-1118

The syzbot software found that the vhost driver did not initialise message buffers which would later be read by user processes. A user with access to the /dev/vhost-net device could use this to read sensitive information from the kernel or other users' processes.

CVE-2018-1120

Qualys reported that a user able to mount FUSE filesystems can create a process such that when another process attempting to read its command line will be blocked for an arbitrarily long time. This could be used for denial of service, or to aid in exploiting a race condition in the other program.

CVE-2018-1130

CVE-2018-3639

Multiple researchers have discovered that Speculative Store Bypass (SSB), a feature implemented in many processors, could be used to read sensitive information from another context. In particular, code in a software sandbox may be able to read sensitive information from outside the sandbox. This issue is also known as Spectre variant 4.

This update allows the issue to be mitigated on some x86 processors by disabling SSB. This requires an update to the processor's microcode, which is non-free. It may be included in an update to the system BIOS or UEFI firmware, or in a future update to the intel-microcode or amd64-microcode packages.

Disabling SSB can reduce performance significantly, so by default it is only done in tasks that use the seccomp feature. Applications that require this mitigation should request it explicitly through the prctl() system call. Users can control where the mitigation is enabled with the spec_store_bypass_disable kernel parameter.

CVE-2018-5814

Jakub Jirasek reported race conditions in the USB/IP host driver. A malicious client could use this to cause a denial of service (crash or memory corruption), and possibly to execute code, on a USB/IP server.

CVE-2018-10021

A physically present attacker who unplugs a SAS cable can cause a denial of service (memory leak and WARN).

CVE-2018-10087, CVE-2018-10124

zhongjiang found that the wait4() and kill() system call implementations did not check for the invalid pid value of INT_MIN. If a user passed this value, the behaviour of the code was formally undefined and might have had a security impact.

CVE-2018-10853

    Wen Xu discovered that the ext4 filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly handle     corrupted meta data in some situations. An attacker could use this to specially craft an ext4 filesystem     that caused a denial of service (system crash) when mounted. (CVE-2018-1093)

    Jann Horn discovered that the Linux kernel's implementation of random seed data reported that it was in a     ready state before it had gathered sufficient entropy. An attacker could use this to expose sensitive     information. (CVE-2018-1108)

    It was discovered that the procfs filesystem did not properly handle processes mapping some memory     elements onto files. A local attacker could use this to block utilities that examine the procfs filesystem     to report operating system state, such as ps(1). (CVE-2018-1120)

    Jann Horn discovered that the ext4 filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly keep     xattr information consistent in some situations. An attacker could use this to construct a malicious ext4     image that, when mounted, could cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary     code. (CVE-2018-11412)

    Piotr Gabriel Kosinski and Daniel Shapira discovered a stack-based buffer overflow in the CDROM driver     implementation of the Linux kernel. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system     crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-11506)

    Shankara Pailoor discovered that a race condition existed in the socket handling code in the Linux kernel.
    A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2018-12232)

    Shankara Pailoor discovered that the JFS filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel contained a buffer     overflow when handling extended attributes. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service     (system crash) or possibly execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-12233)

    Felix Wilhelm discovered that the KVM implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly perform     permission checks in some situations when nested virtualization is used. An attacker in a guest VM could     possibly use this to escape into an outer VM or the host OS. (CVE-2018-12904)

    Wen Xu discovered that the XFS filesystem implementation in the Linux kernel did not properly handle an     error condition with a corrupted xfs image. An attacker could use this to construct a malicious xfs image     that, when mounted, could cause a denial of service (system crash). (CVE-2018-13094)

    It was discovered that the Linux kernel did not properly handle setgid file creation when performed by a     non-member of the group. A local attacker could use this to gain elevated privileges. (CVE-2018-13405)

    Silvio Cesare discovered that the generic VESA frame buffer driver in the Linux kernel contained an     integer overflow. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly     execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-13406)

    Jakub Jirasek discovered that multiple use-after-free errors existed in the USB/IP implementation in the     Linux kernel. A local attacker could use this to cause a denial of service (system crash) or possibly     execute arbitrary code. (CVE-2018-5814)

    It was discovered that a race condition existed in the ARM Advanced Microcontroller Bus Architecture     (AMBA) driver in the Linux kernel that could result in a double free.     It was discovered that an information leak existed in the generic SCSI driver in the Linux kernel. A local     attacker could use this to expose sensitive information (kernel memory). (CVE-2018-1000204)

  - CVE-2018-5391 aka 'FragmentSmack': A flaw in the IP     packet reassembly could be used by remote attackers to     consume lots of CPU time (bnc#1103097).

  - CVE-2018-14734: drivers/infiniband/core/ucma.c allowed     ucma_leave_multicast to access a certain data structure     after a cleanup step in ucma_process_join, which allowed     attackers to cause a denial of service (use-after-free)     (bnc#1103119).

  - CVE-2017-18344: The timer_create syscall implementation     in kernel/time/posix-timers.c didn't properly validate     the sigevent->sigev_notify field, which leads to     out-of-bounds access in the show_timer function (called     when /proc/$PID/timers is read). This allowed userspace     applications to read arbitrary kernel memory (on a     kernel built with CONFIG_POSIX_TIMERS and     CONFIG_CHECKPOINT_RESTORE) (bnc#1102851 bnc#1103580).

  - CVE-2018-9385: When printing the 'driver_override'     option from with-in the amba driver, a very long line     could expose one additional uninitialized byte     (bnc#1100491).

  - CVE-2018-13053: The alarm_timer_nsleep function in     kernel/time/alarmtimer.c had an integer overflow via a     large relative timeout because ktime_add_safe is not     used (bnc#1099924).

  - CVE-2018-13405: The inode_init_owner function in     fs/inode.c allowed local users to create files with an     unintended group ownership, in a scenario where a     directory is SGID to a certain group and is writable by     a user who is not a member of that group. Here, the     non-member can trigger creation of a plain file whose     group ownership is that group. The intended behavior was     that the non-member can trigger creation of a directory     (but not a plain file) whose group ownership is that     group. The non-member can escalate privileges by making     the plain file executable and SGID (bnc#1100416).

  - CVE-2018-13406: An integer overflow in the     uvesafb_setcmap function in     drivers/video/fbdev/uvesafb.c could result in local     attackers being able to crash the kernel or potentially     elevate privileges because kmalloc_array is not used     (bnc#1098016 1100418).

  - CVE-2018-5814: Multiple race condition errors when     handling probe, disconnect, and rebind operations could     be exploited to trigger a use-after-free condition or a     NULL pointer dereference by sending multiple USB over IP     packets (bnc#1096480).

  - CVE-2018-1068: A flaw was found in the implementation of     32-bit syscall interface for bridging. This allowed a     privileged user to arbitrarily write to a limited range     of kernel memory (bnc#1085107).

  - CVE-2018-5803: An error in the '_sctp_make_chunk()'     function (net/sctp/sm_make_chunk.c) when handling SCTP     packets length could be exploited to cause a kernel     crash (bnc#1083900).

  - CVE-2018-7492: A NULL pointer dereference was found in     the net/rds/rdma.c __rds_rdma_map() function allowed     local attackers to cause a system panic and a     denial-of-service, related to RDS_GET_MR and     RDS_GET_MR_FOR_DEST (bnc#1082962).
