Exim < 4.97.1 SMTP smuggling

medium Nessus Plugin ID 187639

Synopsis

The remote mail server is potentially affected by a SMTP smuggling vulnerabilities.

Description

Exim before 4.97.1 allows SMTP smuggling in certain PIPELINING/CHUNKING configurations. Remote attackers can use a published exploitation technique to inject e-mail messages with a spoofed MAIL FROM address, allowing bypass of an SPF protection mechanism. This occurs because Exim supports <LF>.<CR><LF> but some other popular e-mail servers do not.

Note that Nessus has not tested for these issues but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Upgrade to Exim 4.97.1 or later.
