Ubuntu 24.04 LTS : cups-browsed vulnerability (USN-7042-1)

high Nessus Plugin ID 207844

Synopsis

The remote Ubuntu host is missing a security update.

Description

The remote Ubuntu 24.04 LTS host has packages installed that are affected by a vulnerability as referenced in the USN-7042-1 advisory.

Simone Margaritelli discovered that cups-browsed could be used to create arbitrary printers from outside the local network. In combination with issues in other printing components, a remote attacker could possibly use this issue to connect to a system, created manipulated PPD files, and execute arbitrary code when a printer is used. This update disables support for the legacy CUPS printer discovery protocol.

Tenable has extracted the preceding description block directly from the Ubuntu security advisory.

Note that Nessus has not tested for this issue but has instead relied only on the application's self-reported version number.

Solution

Update the affected cups-browsed and / or cups-browsed-tests packages.
