Tenable's 2023 Capture The Flag: Are You Ready to Test Your Hacking Skills?

join Tenable's Capture the flag competition at Black Hat USA 2023

Tenable is bringing its annual hacking competition to Black Hat USA 2023 in a hybrid in-person and online experience, giving competitors around the world a chance to have fun and test their skills.

Tenable’s annual Capture the Flag hackathon will bring together contestants from around the world on Aug. 9-10 in our first-ever hybrid in-person/online competition. The competition itself takes place online, so participants can compete from almost anywhere. But this year we’re also welcoming those who would like to participate in person to join us in one of the following battle rooms, where you’ll be eligible to collect commemorative challenge coins and event merchandise:

  • Las Vegas: at Black Hat USA 2023, Mandalay Bay Hotel. 3950 S Las Vegas Blvd, Las Vegas, NV
  • Singapore: at Tenable offices, 9 Temasek Boulevard Suntec Tower 2, Level 31 Singapore 038989
  • Sydney: at the Westcon-Comstor, Unit 4/39 Herbert St, St Leonards NSW 2065

The 2023 Capture the Flag competition will present a broad and unique set of challenges, developed by the Tenable Research team, to give competitors of diverse backgrounds a chance to have fun as they put their skills to the test. Challenges will span a variety of categories, including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Reverse engineering
  • Exploit development
  • Web application security
  • Cloud
  • Forensics
  • Steganography
  • Regular expressions

To solve these challenges, participants will use different cybersecurity methods and tools to find pieces of code (known as a “flag”) and submit them to earn points. Some challenges can be solved with just a web browser or hex editor, some require a little coding and a few may require special software that can be downloaded for free. Tenable products are not required to compete, but knowledge of Tenable Nessus may help with some challenges.

The competition opens on Wednesday, August 9, at midnight EDT and closes on Thursday, August 10, 2023, at 11:59 pm EDT. Participants can compete as individuals or in teams to be eligible for prize consideration and to earn bragging rights — including a virtual certificate and winner badge. The top three global contestants or teams will be recognized in the virtual Tenable CTF Debrief & Awards Ceremony on August 14. Registration is required, click here to reserve your spot today.
