Tenable Releases New Look for Nessus 4 Vulnerability Scanner

November 30, 2009 · Columbia, MD

Tenable provides major GUI enhancement and improved performance to industry leading network vulnerability scanner.

Tenable Network Security, Inc., the leader in Unified Security Monitoring and creator of the popular and award-winning Nessus® vulnerability scanner, today announced the release of Nessus version 4.2 for general availability. Tenable’s Nessus vulnerability scanner is the world-leader in active scanners, featuring high-speed discovery, configuration auditing, asset profiling, sensitive data discovery and vulnerability analysis of your security posture.

New Look and Feel

With the release of Tenable’s Nessus 4.2, Nessus users will gain access to a new web-based interface to manage the initiation and results of their scans. It is no longer necessary to use a standalone NessusClient to connect to the Nessus Server. With the updated design of Nessus 4.2, scan results and scan policies are stored directly on the server. It is now possible to log out of the interface and log back in without disrupting scans that are in progress.

Improved Reporting

Tenable has improved the reporting capabilities within Nessus 4.2 to aid in analysis of vulnerability scan results. Multiple users can log into the web-based interface concurrently and can use a “compare” function to show differences against a previous scan. Nessus 4.2 has also improved the “.nessus” format that allows for easier parsing of report data. Finally, Tenable has included a new HTML export format and more exports will soon be available through the plugin feed.

Flexible Deployment

Nessus 4.2 is available as software (32-bit and 64-bit binaries for every major platform), virtual appliance and physical appliance. For more information or to download Nessus 4.2 today, please visit: http://www.nessus.org/nessus/

“We are very pleased to announce the release of Nessus 4.2,” said Renaud Deraison, Chief Research Officer of Tenable and author of Nessus. “The user experience with this release will raise the standard for what is expected from enterprise-class vulnerability scanners.”

ProfessionalFeed Subscription

Tenable’s Research team is a dedicated group focused on the development of security checks for publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. The Nessus Plugin database is updated on a daily basis and all the newest plugins can be retrieved via the automatic update feature of Nessus or updated manually. ProfessionalFeed subscriptions for Nessus 4.2 are required for all commercial use of Nessus.

Enterprise-Class Monitoring

Tenable’s Security Center can be deployed to provide continuous, asset-based security and compliance monitoring and reporting for medium and large networks. Tenable’s Security Center supports Nessus 4.2’s unified configuration, target and results format.
