Ubiquiti UniFi Cloud Key - Unprotected root UART Access

High

Synopsis

Tenable has discovered an unprotected root access vulnerability via UART on the UniFi Cloud Key with firmware less than v.1.1.11. This vulnerability is exploitable even after configuring both the UniFi Protect and Cloud Key Management portal with a non-default password. Connecting to the UART port drops you directly to a root shell. Exploitation requires disassembly of the device and connecting to pads R (receive), T (transmit), and G (ground) that are present on and labeled on the main logic board via silk screen. Use of a UART to RS232 convert (such as a buspirate device) will be required to connect to the shell and gain root access.

Proof of Concept

Solution

Upgrade to firmware 1.1.11.
